Free Wireless in Melbourne

Given that I now have totally mobile computing power, I need to work out ways in which my internet addiction can be fed when not in range of my home. Being a student at RMIT isn't much help - with all the paranoid software they insist you install, using their networks is more hinderance than help.

A few people have pointed me in the direction of free wi-fi hotspots around the city, but it's hard to tell whether they will turn out to be 'free' spots like at Starbucks or Maccas - ie $5 an hour. Bastards.

So here's my list of free (really free) hotspots around Melbourne. If anyone has any more to add, please leave them below. There's probably a tonne of hotels I've missed, but whilst I love sitting in a good hotel lobby for a few hours, I don't have time to go check them all out.

I've been adding and changing so much to this list that I've decided to expand it to include all capital cities in Australia. Please feel free to add any additional spots in comments, and thanks to all of you who have given advice.

INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS
This guy has put together a list of all airlines who offer Wi-Fi access, and shock horror, there's actually mention of an Australian airline. Apparently Qantas offer it on internationals, but I'd be curious to find out if it's free.

NOW MAPPED!
Check out the map of wi-fi locations.

  1. UPDATE
I am such a moron - I sometimes post stuff to my blog so that it's there later as a reference when I need it. So it's 11am on Monday, and I need to send files to the printers ASAP, and I'm sitting in my car on Elizabeth St. I know - I'll look up that list of free Wi-Fi spots in Melbourne. It's on my blog... arrrrgghhh!!!

  2. I have heard that Horse Bazaar at 397 Lt Lonsdale Street Melbourne also has free wi-fi.

Also a restaurant on Lygon Street near the Baker's Delight/newsagency. I forget what its name was but there used to be a sign in the window saying "Free wireless here". Don't know if it's still there or whether it was really free.
