Iceland. Proudly Green & Gay

This is Johanna Sigurdardottir, a former air hostess. By the end of this week, she will be Iceland's Prime Minister, and the first openly gay national leader in the world.

Even better - the minority government formed by this former minister for social affairs is a coalition of the Social Democrats and the Left Greens party.

Unfortunately it won't last long - elections are scheduled to be held in April this year, but we can safely assume the right wing are not going to be put back in charge any time soon.

The previous administration was forced to resign on January 26 following months of increasingly violent protests over the devastating impact of the global economic crisis.

  1. The latest opinion polls for January 2009 have the Left-Greens on 30%, with the Social Democrats on 22%, and the centre-right Independence Party on 24%, so we should see a Green-SDA government, barring any radical shifts.
